9 ways to stay financially fit for all seasons!

You are currently viewing 9 ways to stay financially fit for all seasons!

Spring is a great time to start anything as it is a time for sowing seeds for the future and making drastic changes that lead to new beginnings. If you have been feeling like you have been in financial hibernation recently perhaps I can help you to take a new approach to wealth creation. It’s what I like to call ‘Financial fitness’ – and we can all do it regardless of our physical shape, size or fitness level – so, it’s a solution for everyone.

Remember though, that just like physical fitness, it takes time and consistent effort. Try following these 9 steps and I guarantee that with this kind of commitment to your financial wellness, you can achieve great financial stability, growth and ultimately peace of mind all year round!

1. Set Goals

Like any fitness regime you need to start with a plan. Your goals need to be both short and long-term financial growth objectives. Short-term would be things like having a good nest egg for tough times and savings for emergencies, and medium to long-term would be paying off debt, buying a home, or investing for retirement.

2. Create a budget

This is essential to monitor income and expenditure. You can never spend more than you earn! Track income and expenses and ensure you allocate income for essential expenses, savings, and unexpected extras. The main thing here is to stick to your budget and don’t overspend.

3. Save for the future

From day one allocate a portion of income to savings every month. Just like exercising every day, this creates a great lifelong habit. Most importantly don’t just save for unnecessary expenditure – save to invest in long-term financial growth.

4. Manage debt wisely

Any additional income like salary raises, bonuses or windfalls should be prioritised as an opportunity to reduce debt! Start with high-interest debts first, like reducing the bond on your home, and try to make some payments on smaller debts too. Avoid unnecessary debt like clothing accounts and splurging on credit cards – and strive to maintain a good credit rating.

5. Save to Invest

Don’t waste savings by putting them in low-interest-bearing accounts like banks. Aim for financial growth through medium and long-term investments. I can assist you in choosing what is right for you and we can investigate various options like tax saving investments which have immediate benefits, medium-term investments like Unit trusts and good retirement options for long-term wealth creation.

6. Educate Yourself

Even though your Financial Advisor can make the best decisions for you it does no harm to educate yourself and I, for one, encourage it so we can work on your future together. Learn what you can about budgeting, investments and retirement planning. Books, online courses, podcasts and reading articles such as this one can help you gain knowledge and make your own informed decisions.

7. Protect yourself and your wealth

The recent pandemic taught us that life and wealth creation are tenuous and massive change can happen very unexpectedly. If you are suddenly taken ill and you have no Critical Illness or Income Protection cover, for example, this can seriously deplete any wealth you may have created. Obtain appropriate insurance coverage to safeguard against unforeseen events like these, accidents or property damage.

8. Review and Adjust

Just like in the setting of any goals, it is essential to constantly monitor your progress and review your financial well-being. Review insurance policies periodically to ensure they align with your needs, and regularly assess your financial situation to make adjustments to your budget, investments, or overall strategy if required.

9. Consult the experts

Very few people obtain optimum fitness without the help of a trained physical fitness professional. Top professional athletes would never succeed without their trainers and Coaches, so if you aspire to become seriously wealthy and have a great retirement you need to engage the services of a trained professional Financial Advisor.

I would be honoured to assist you on this journey of staying financially fit for all seasons, as helping people to retire wealthy, and with peace of mind, is something very close to my heart. Just talk to me and let’s start sowing those seeds for your great financial future.

Happy Spring!
